My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.
--George Washington

I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life.
--Abraham Lincoln

From my mother I learned the value of prayer, how to have dreams and believe I could make them come true.
--Ronald Reagan

Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.

Numbers 9 describes the cloud that led the Israelites in the desert. It was a cloud by day and fire by night. God led them unambiguously and demonstrated His constant presence to them. They lived day in and day out seeing the cloud because the Tabernacle was placed in the center of the camp. And they were still capable of sinning against God by making idols and committing aggregious acts before it when Moses was away. If it was easy for them to take God for granted because they got used to Him, how much easier is it for us who live without being able to see Him physically?

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds; God of God; Light of Light; Very God of Very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven; And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; And the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; And ascended into heaven; And sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Lord and Giver of Life; Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; Who spake by the prophets. And I believe one Holy catholic and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the Resurrection of the dead; And the life of the world to come. Amen.

Growing up in an AG church, we didn't have much doctrine. I think this is beautiful.

We sang "Shall We Gather at the River?" at church the other day and it reminded me of Sam. It's a beautiful hymn about the River that flows from the Throne of God.

Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod;

With its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God?

Yes, we'll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river,

Gather with the saints at the river, that flows by the throne of God.

Ere we reach the shining river, lay we ev'ry burden down;

Grace our spirits will deliver, and provide a robe and crown.

Yes, we'll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river,

Gather with the saints at the river, that flows by the throne of God.

Deep river, my home is over Jordan,

Deep river, I want to cross over into campground.

Soon we'll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease;

Soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace.

Yes, we'll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river,

Gather with the saints at the river, that flows by the throne of God.

 - Lowry and Traditional, arr. John Carter
